An openly gay bishop of the U.S. Episcopalians was chosen to pray the opening prayer for the Sunday pre-inaugural service for President elect Obama. The selection of New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson said in an interview with The Concord Monitor that his selection would not go unnoticed by the gay and lesbian community. He had also said last month the selection of Pastor Rick Warren was like a slap in the face of the gay community. Warren was openly against gays and lesbians being married in California.
I am glad the gay and lesbian community will notice the good will toward them for asking Bishop Robinson to pray, but it was my understanding that Bishop Robinson was lifting a prayer up to God on behalf of all American’s. If his prayer is not for all people then why is he going to pray? Are not the gay and lesbian community part of the entire nation. I do not think God is going to only answer a prayer for America, only with the gay and lesbian community. I think God will hear his prayer and apply it to all people.
Sure, he is homosexual, and some will have a problem with him openly praying for anyone. There are some that will say, “God does not hear his prayer.” I do not know; but a gay righteous man’s prayer is still better than a straight sinner’s prayer and as an American he has the right to pray. And, who am I to say I will not let him pray for me, based on his sexual preference?
I understand the small mindedness of the people of the Christian faith. God in the Old Testament did not like homosexually. Christians think this mindset spills over into the time of Jesus; but I’m not sure that is correct. Jesus never said anything about the subject, the Apostles never made it a big issue; the only pusher of the issue was the church. But, there is another issue here; Christianity vs. Americanism both is not interchangeable as Christianity would have you to believe. One does not have to be a member of one to be a member of the other. I may not agree with homosexually as a Christian; but I have to accept it as an American.
The bible says to work out your own salvation, so if Bishop Robinson believes his salvation is secured who am I to question it?
